The receipt of Medal of Honor reveals his devotion to St Michael

The doctor was in Taliban’s custody for five days before the operation. The 36-year-old Edward Byers Jr, became the hero of the rescue operation.

The doctor who witnessed the operation described the heroic acts of Byers. Bayer’s team approached the building where they believed the doctor was held. His teammate Nicolas Checque moved in first and was badly wounded. Following him, Byers rushed into the room and tackled the enemy aiming an AK-47 at him. Byers soon noticed another man moving across the room, he engaged the other enemy too. Within no time, he called for the hostage. Byers even shielded him from the high volume of fire inside the small room. In that particular operation five Taliban militants were killed.

But the operation added a golden medal in his uniform too. He was awarded the nation’s highest military honour, the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama on Monday.

Bayer’s response after receiving the nation’s highest military honour would surprise anyone. He said that it was St Michael the Archangel who shielded him from the gunfire. For years he has prayed to St Michel the Archangel, who is described in the Scripture as the one who defends God’s people from the hands of enemies. Bayer shared that he always wore a St Michael the Archangel patch “on my back. … Every single mission I’ve ever done, I’ve always said a prayer to St Michael to protect and watch over us.”
