Sri Lankan Catholics ask for holiday on Good Friday

1457081625Catholics in Sri Lanka asked the country’s president to make Good Friday a “mercantile holiday,” so that Christians working in private sector could properly commemorate the day.

“Good Friday is a public holiday but not a mercantile holiday which means Christians working in the private sector do not enjoy the right to fulfill our religious obligations,” said Kumarasiri Fernando, a Catholic teacher from Archdiocese.

“We hope it could be a holiday for all private sector workers from this year on,” said Father Jayalath Balagalla, Aquinas University College lecturer. At present, Good Friday is a holiday only for banks and the government.
