Vatican City: The football legend Diego Maradona said Pope Francis helped him to revive his faith and to return to the Catholic Church. He came to meet the Holy Father in Vatican as part of the Pope’s United for Peace Football match held in Rome on Wednesday. Acclaimed football stars like Ronaldinho, Francesco Totti and Felipe Anderson also participated in the match.
“He is doing a great job also inside the Vatican, which pleases all Catholics. I had distanced myself from the church for many reasons. Pope Francis made me come back,” Maradona said in a news conference held prior to the match.
The money collected from the match would be distributed to various Catholic charities like the Scholas Occurrentes Foundation. It was in 2015 that Pope Francis founded the Scholas Occurentes.
Previously in 2014 too, Maradona was in Rome to play at the Pope’s charitable match.
