The issue of a nun from Kerala barred from taking part in a national medical examination for refusing to take off her religious veil, assumed a wider dimension as the state’s political and religious leaders expressed their strong protest. Sister Seba, a nun who belongs to Syro-Malabar Church, was denied permission to partake in the All-India Pre-Medical Test since she was not willing to remove her religious veil worn on the head. The authorities denied permission on the ground that attending national test wearing a head veil was against the Supreme Court ruling.
Mr. V.M. Sudheeran, President of Indian National Congress state unit openly criticized the government for the unfortunate incident. “The onus is on the government to see that such things do not happen. Such acts affect the faith of an individual,” he said. E.T. Mohammed Basheer, a Member of Indian Parliament also expressed his disagreement and said that the observation of the Supreme Court on the dress code was not acceptable. Cardinal Baselious Mar Cleemis, head of Malankara Catholic Church, said that the incident should not have happened.
