Islamic State militants demolished Mar Elian Monastery, an ancient Catholic monastery, located outside a Syrian town. The monastery, founded before the year 500 AD, was destroyed using bulldozers, reported the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group.
Mar Elian monastery, located just outside Al Quaryatayn, also provided refuge to hundreds of Syrians displaced from Al Quaryatayn, and partnered with Muslim donors to provide for their needs. Al Quaryatayn was captured by the Islamic State on August 6. Around 160 – 230 Christians and Muslims were abducted from the town as yet..
