Exposing kids to porn is abuse, says Australian bishops

Exposure to pornography would harm the children in a manner which should be considered as child abuse, said Australia’s Catholic bishops.

“Children have a right to be children, away from the pressures applied by advertising and other images on television and the internet for them to dress and act as mini-adults. Bombarding children with sexualized images can hurt their normal development,” said a commission of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference in a statement to the Australian Senate committee while they were making an inquiry into the harm caused by internet pornography.

“Allowing children to be exposed to pornography is a form of abuse,” the bishops said. Those children exposed to pornography would be more likely to fall into sexual relationships with their peers and would adopt risky sexual behavior.
