Same sex marriage mania, gaining popularity in Europe and US, has its disastrous ripples hitting against the shores of Australia. But Australian Bishops are not going to give in. In a pastoral letter on marriage titled ‘Don’t Mess with Marriage’ Australia’s Catholic Bishops have reaffirmed the Catholic teaching on marriage. This affirmation came in the context of Australian political leaders considering whether to define marriage in law to recognize same-sex union as civil marriages.
“Catholic Church in Tasmania is exercising its right to freedom of opinion, just as opponents to the Church’s views on marriage are also exercising their rights” Archbishop Julian Porteous of Hobart said. “We are being asked to abandon the plan of God for marriage and family, and this would be a disastrous step” he added.
Meanwhile Randy Croome, national director of gay marriage advocacy group Australian Marriage Equality, alleged that the booklet is illegal under the law of Australina state of Tasmania. The group have filed a formal complaint against the archbishop.
