United Nations tribunal’s decision to suspend all trial proceedings against the two Italian mariners were highly criticized by the South Indian church officials and fishing industry. The two mariners were accused of killing two Catholic fishermen of the Southern Indian coast three years ago.On August 24, a German based International Company on the Law of the Sea; Hamburg directed India and Italy to withdraw all the proceedings related to 2012 incident.
“The decision is a threat to Indian sovereignty”, said Pereira, vicar-general of the Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram. “We want Indian government to take up the issue and ensure justice to both the poor fishermen. We condemn the authority for showing their black face to the fishermen”, adds Pereira.The two accused Italian mariners, Salvatroe Girone and Massimiliano Latorre were murder charged for shooting the fishermen.
