Though there was an increase in Catholics worldwide, In Europe there was only two percent growth, even though the continent’s 40 percent of the population is composed of Catholics.
According to the Vatican’s Central Office for Church Statistics, the number of baptized Catholics reached 1.27 billion or 17.8 per cent of the global population. “The African continent remains without a doubt the one with the highest growth,” the report described. The number had increased 41 percent in Africa, while in Asia it increased by 20 percent.
The number of priests increased in Africa, Asia and Central and South America. But it decreased in Europe and Oceania. Women in religious orders continued to decrease, dropping by 10,846 in 2014. The biggest decreases were in North and South America, Europe and Oceania while it continued to increase in Africa and Asia.
