Pope Francis brought a new light into the concept of repentance by connecting it with the profession of faith. “Admitting one’s sin is the profession of faith”, he said in the homily. The Pope was expounding the biblical text where St. Peter falls at the feet of the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man”.
Commenting that ‘astonishment and humility’ are the marks of faith, Pope Francis said that “inability to recognize ourselves as sinners distances us from a true confession [of faith] in Jesus Christ. This is what makes the difference,” he added.
Pope emphasized that a true encounter with Jesus requires two essential things: recognize Jesus as Lord and to admit oneself as a sinner.
