Nicol, an inmate of Chile’s Coyhaique prison could not believe her eyes! She has received a reply from the Holy Father Pope Francis; indeed a very personal reply. It was brought to her by the local bishop Luis Infanti.
The story began a year ago, when she wrote a letter to Pope Francis narrating her experiences in the prison, in which she had requested his earnest prayers. It was the Apostolic Nuncio, Ivo Scapolo, during his visit to the prison, who inspired her to write a letter to Pope.
The letter was sent to the Holy See through the diocese of Aysén’s communications office.
Pope personally replied to the letter, but it took a year to reach the prisoner, due to some unavoidable circumstances, as the diocese says.
In the letter, the Holy Father thanked Nicol for the trust she had in the Pope in writing a letter. He commended her for her prayers raised from the solitude of the prison.
“For my part, I assure you that I am keeping you in my prayers, as well as your son Fernando, and I ask God to grant you the light of faith and the strength that comes from hope, and that you can experience the consolation of our merciful God in the closeness of the people you love,” the Pope continued.
In the concluding lines, the Pope has requested her continued prayers for him. Thus the Pope signs off: “May Jesus bless you and the Holy Virgin care for you. Affectionately, Francisco”.
